MySQL ERROR 1054 (42S22): Unknown column in 'field list'
The query references a column that doesn’t exist in the table (or an unquoted string being read as a column).
Seen on:
MySQL
Meaning
MySQL looked for a column by that name and didn’t find it. A frequent hidden cause: a string value written in double quotes under ANSI_QUOTES, or not quoted at all, so MySQL treats it as an identifier.
Common causes
- Migration adding the column not run
- Typo or wrong table alias
- String value not quoted (
WHERE name = John) - Column exists in a different table of the JOIN
⚡ Quick fix
DESCRIBE table;to see columns- Run pending migrations
- Quote string values or use prepared statements
Detailed fix by platform
MySQL
- Qualify columns with table aliases in joins:
u.email.
How to diagnose
- Column — Exists in DESCRIBE output?
- Context — field list / where clause / on clause?
