Cloudflare Error 522: Connection Timed Out
Cloudflare’s TCP connection to your origin timed out — the origin didn’t answer at all.
Seen on:
Cloudflare
Meaning
Unlike 521 (refused), 522 means packets were dropped or the origin was too overloaded to complete the handshake within ~15 seconds.
Common causes
- Origin overloaded
- Firewall silently dropping Cloudflare IPs
- Wrong origin IP
- Network/routing issues at the host
- Keep-alive disabled causing connection churn
⚡ Quick fix
- Check origin CPU/RAM/connection counts
- Allow-list Cloudflare IPs (drop rules cause timeouts)
- Confirm DNS origin IP
- Contact your host about network issues
Detailed fix by platform
Cloudflare
- Use the Ray ID and traceroute from the origin to Cloudflare to spot routing issues.
How to diagnose
- Load — Is the origin saturated?
- Firewall — Drop rules for Cloudflare IPs?
- DNS — Right origin IP?
